I'm in Barcelona next week and going to Tannhauser at the Liceu.
Just wondered what the dress code is like so would be very grateful
for any advice? Don't want to turn up in a full-length posh frock if
everyone else is really casual.

Muchos gracias in advance

I read that it's expected that each member of the audience will dress
up as a character from whatever opera they're seeing.

On a slightly related topic: IŽd be very curious to know if Venus uses a
body-double in Act 1 (youŽll know what I mean when you see the staging).
Looking forward to your report.

I saw the same production in Paris, and I'd say yes it definitely was
a double there!

Somewhere I heard that perhaps Judit Nemeth (the alternate cast Venus in
Barcelona) may attempt it herself..Probably not true, though.

Intersting about the Paris performance - I had friends in the audience and
they couldnŽt tell , despite relying heavily on their binoculars (they
didnŽt have good seats though..)

From my vantage point in the rear stalls I was fairly that Venus A had
a face that wasn't Beatrice Uria-Monzon's, and IIRC one of the reviews
I read also mentioned that a double was used, so it must be true, heh
heh. Who knows, really? The former Mrs T will have to have a good look
for us in Barcelona.

Really enjoyed it in Paris, especially Eva-Maria Westbroek and
Matthias Goerne - fabulous.

Well, judging from the production photos I've seen of this particular
Tannhauser then it seems to contain lots of semi-naked men covered in
copious amounts of red paint. Think I'll just stick to wearing a
nice frock then!

Thankyou everyone for the advice.... I shall certainly report back
afterwards. I'm going on the 10th April when Peter Seiffert and Bo
Skohvus (sp??) are in the cast. Just hope Wolfram doesn't end up
strangling Elisabeth again, like he did the last time I saw this done
in Frankfurt.

I was rather surprised that it's starting at 8.00pm, considering it's
such a long opera. It's due to end at about quarter to one in the
morning or something silly.

That's normal Spanish urban hours. You'll be able to eat afterwards as
well, if you want to.

Pretty much whatever! There are lots of great restaurants in
Barcelona open through the wee hours of the morning.
Have fun!

Anything earlier than 2.30am is not late by Spanish or Catalan standards

I've only been there once, for Parsifal in 2005. Everyone was pretty
smart, but then everyone in Barcelona is generally smart, but it was a
mixture of Glyndebourne tux-n-frox (without the mothball pong), German-
style current fashion and classic cocktail dressing up. So I'd say
almost anything you could think of as smart would do. For what it's
worth, I was in a very cheap seat near the top and the lady next to me
was wearing a very traditional evening frock.

Regards,

Helen
