Having recently watched a replay of the 2005 'Cardiff Singer of the World'
which had an English tenor competing, it got me thinking "How many dramatic
tenors or heldentenors has the UK produced that have had international
careers?" Am I mistaken in thinking UK tenors tend to be of a lyric
persuasion?
The first two dramatic/helden tenors that come to mind are John Treleavan
and Charles Craig. Are there any others?

Grant

Jon Weaving performed the part of Siegfried both in German and in
English. However, I suspect he's of the Australian persuasion. Also,
Kenneth Collins has been a fine dramatic tenor.

Hi Bill,

And how right you are... Much neglected in the history of British
Opera...

Best regards

Frank Mullings was a true dramatic tenor; one might argue that Craig and
others cited on this thread are spintos singing heavier roles.

Often the case, and even moreso with French tenors. Now, it's
commonplace for spintos and many a lyric tenor to take on dramatic
rep.
