Did anyone here hear Milanov live. Did her voice record accurately in
your opinion when you heard her back then and listened to her
recordings. I suspect it sounded different.

I heard Milanov live perhaps 25 times in complete operas. This was
during her final seasons of singing opera, but the voice at its best
was still incredibly gorgeous. I heard her live in Cavalleria,
Gioconda, Chenier, Boccanegra, Tosca, Forza, Chenier, and maybe one or
two more.

As for her recordings, I love them. True, the Gioconda and Forza
complete recordings were simply too late, and the Tosca perhaps also a
bit too late. However, there are still many glorious moments in each.

The finest recording she ever made for RCA, IMO, was Milanov Sings, in
1953. She did all her big arias, and the voice was at its best. The LP
number is easy to remember: LM-1777.

Of course, the complete Trovatore and Cav were still mostly in her
prime years. From 1954-5 it became more hit or miss, but was still
mostly hit for me.

Ed, Did you think her sound recorded close to the live sound. I
picture her as having a voice like Nilsson that came off sounding
differently in a house.

Her voice live had a "softer" quality to it than on some of her
(especially later) recordings. But that famous high piano A or Bb was
very much like to sounded on recordings, but was more thrilling live.
It filled the Met easily though she was singing a very soft piano
note.

When she let it out, it was a huge voice, perhaps matched only by
Tebaldi in the Italian roles in the 50's and 60's. I feel sure it was
always a large voice, from her oprea debut in 1927 onward.

Thanks so much. Sometimes I do not like the sound of her voice at all
( almost like a nasal falsetto), but at other times it is close to
Ponselle's in beauty. It does depend on how late in her career the
recording is.
