Post by CHSIIIMelitone's tessitura is rather high, reaching (in declamato) even to High G
and F# and several F's, but the lines are more buffo and less legato than
Guardiano.
Guardiano is the more profondo role, although the role also reaches up to
F#.

Thanks.

There was an entire run of performances in June of 2008.

Any DVD's of it available? There are so few commercial VCR and DVD
performances of Van Dam out there. I have them all, plus as many
"pirates" as I've been able to find, but I am no longer traveling, so
had to miss seeing the Brussels "Forza" live, and would dearly love to
see what he did with the minor role.
What was he, Padre Guardiano or Melitone? Or Papa Calatrava?
SJT, from a city where Forza is thought of as an abomination, and is
theatrically cursed to boot.
Melitone, which was why I was surprised he was doing it - Padre
Guardiano is the larger role.
But Guardiano is a real basso profondo role, and I don't think Van Dam
could sing it. Too many low F's.

Yes, but Guardiano's two F#'s are with the full chorus duplicating him
as he sings. You can usually never hear Guardiano here, and, in fact,
in the score there is an option to sing these two notes an octove
lower. I have seen many bassos somply note sing these notes at all. On
recordings, Siepi is the loudest on these high notes, or he was placed
closest to the mikes!! The highest sustained note for Guardiano is an
E natural, which is repeated many times in the Convent Scene, and even
here, the final note of the big duet with the soprano is an E natural
that most bassos sing, but is not written at all. It is written an
octove lower, also.
