I enjoyed the violin concerto a lot untill some fool explained that Brahms
was gay. I refuse to believe that.

Why is every major composer gay This must be gossip and cannot be true.

You think of Brahms that he fell in love with Clara Schumann and you know
the pictures with an old man with a beard and 8 children but that seems to
be just fake.

He was never married Did not have children and Schumann called him the best
looking blond guy he ever saw

Amazing indeed

I don't think that Brahms was gay, gerberk. He was certainly an attractive
young blond guy when he met the Schumanns, and it's a little more clear the
Robert Schumann had 'issues' than that Brahms was gay. Schumann's diaries
show a real fascination, as I understand it, with 'relationships between men
of an intimate kind', and I think it's possible that Schumann had a 'thing'
about Brahms, but I don't think Brahms was really gay. I think he was one of
those people who were born to be a bachelor

I didn't say celibate, I said bachelor..

But didn't he play the piano in a house of ill repute (not the MET) as a
teenager, and wasn't there some cockamamie storie rationalizing his
avoidance of women because of that/

Brahms was hopelessly in love with Clara Schumann...but would not do
anything which would compromise his deep friendship of Schumann himself.

This is NOT just from the movie of Brahms & Schumann...but real life. Both
he and Clara attended the premiere of 'Tristan' at Bayreuth...and apparently
Clara was shocked beyond belief at the disgustingly risqué music Wagner had
dared to show upon the stage.

Or something like that. I'm sure there are others who remember this stuff
far better than I.

This is because you cannot be straight and write music like they did.
The only way to write great music is to be the queen of your castle.
Ask Verdi,Wagner,Puccini,R.Strauss....They will tell you...CH

I was so shocked when I found out that Mozart and Beethoven were gay
too. And it's so sad that great artists like Wagner, Verdi and Puccini
were also forced to lead double lives because society was so intolerant
in those days.

I just wish that I had a music degree so that I could actually be
clever enough to hear their repressed homosexuality in the music :-)

Good point. Of course Strauss, Wagner and Puccini went to incredible
lengths to "cover their tracks" as it were, Strauss trying to put
everyone off the scent by depicting himself having sex with his wife
(Sinfonia Domestica, prominent part for Bass Drum) while Puccini and
Wagner just womanised in an attempt to fool everyone.

In the case of Wagner I doubt Mr von Bulow realised the composer was
gay either so you are in good company.

Kind regards,
Alan M. Watkins
