Post by Andrew T. KayPost by Ray HallSomeone mentioned Leontyne Price and a joke -- what was the joke; I've
never heard it?
Also, I can't find any good bios of her. Suggestions?
At the time RCA released that red box set to commemorate her 70th
birthday (which was in 1997), she said on the enclosed interview disc
that she was at work on her autobiography. However, that was almost ten
years ago and I've never heard anything in the way of an update.

There is a very short biography of her in "And So I Sing:
African-American Divas of Opera and Concert" by Rosalyn Story.
It gives some interesting info on the history of black women in opera
and recital, going back into the 19th century and even slavery. But
the chapter on Price isn't particularly revealing and I wish there
were more. Anyone who was inspired to pursue opera after attending
Salome with Ljuba Welitsch, who then went on to share a Met debut with
Corelli, THEN open the new Met in an opera composed for her... well,
she must have a few rather interesting tales to tell!
For my taste, she sang the best "Senza mamma bimba tu sei morta" ever.
The best "Depuis le jour", too. Etc etc. It's a personal thing. No
denying. Love her. Love her. Worship worship. No she wasn't
perfect. For many things, you have to have the right performance. But
when Price was giving the right performance, it was the RIGHT
performance. What a voice!
She has been my ultimate diva for quite some time. I only heard her a
few times at the end of her career (1983 and 1984) but she could still
spin out the most elegant phrases with a very pure tone. Sigh....
Price really makes me kvell!
